My work investigates female ageing. Witty yet ambiguous, the work creates a visual dialogue concerned with women who are in their ‘middle’ age. I am interested in looking at how women of this age group are often marginalised in both the working environment and in a broader social context. The work conveys a sense of loss, a mourning for youth and declining fertility but flirts with sexuality, sex and the ageing body. Some pieces are reminiscent of discreet objects, something you may find in a drawer; a sex toy and heirloom rolled into one.
Additionally, the work plays with opposites, hard and soft - steel wool, metal clips and paint combined with soft fabrics create an unease and tension, the beautiful versus the grotesques. Elemental, raw and naked, heightened by a soft ‘cosmetic’ palette, the work utilizes everyday materials, for example, velvet, putty, synthetic hair, Lycra, rubber, cosmetics and paint. Recently I have incorporated traditional female crafts. The process of undertaking the work itself can often be laborious and monotonous alluding to that of domestic chores – mundane and repetitive, often unfinished as I struggle to maintain a ‘work-life’ balance.
As part of a historical continuum my work is rooted in the emerging Feminist movement of the second half of the 20th Century that endeavours to challenge and question the role and status of woman as artist and woman in a domestic context. The work references the domestic and the mundane, exploring a notion of ‘house-craft’ whilst also acknowledging a suppressed or hidden sexuality, a sense of loss and a consideration of the objectification of woman and the continued sexualisation of society.
